4th ITEA Symposium, 9-10 October 2003, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
ITEA - Information Technology for European Advancement - is now at the halfway mark in its eight-year programme (1999 - 2007). At our 4th annual symposium we will present achievements to date and outline the course for the second half of the programme, which is designed to maintain our leadership in software-intensive systems.
ITEA has established a strong position at the heart of European embedded and distributed software development. Our 6th Call for projects looks promising and the 7th Call will be starting up in January 2004.
ITEA has invited software decision-makers and top speakers from the business and academic community in the impressive surroundings of the almost 700-year-old University Hall of the KU Leuven (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) right in the centre of Leuven. Ms Patricia Ceysens, the Flemish Minister for Economy, Foreign Policy and E-government, will open the symposium.
Project exhibition & presentations
The current set of 49 projects (of which 23 are completed, 25 are running and one is in its start-up phase) - with some 300 partners from 18 European countries - has established a solid basis for further development. Many of these have led to the creation of new products, and some to new start-ups. In the project exhibition members of 32 teams will use demos and prototypes to demonstrate the impact of their work and three particularly significant projects will be showcased on Thursday afternoon:
UMsdL - Powerful real-time UML
The results of this project allow software developers to rapidly
master complex software development, thus improving Europe's position as a major player in the market for
tools for real-time software design.
HomeNet2Run - The Interconnected Home
This consortium has built bridges between wired-network,
wireless-network and middleware clusters, allowing European consumer electronics, telecoms and IT companies
to combine the previously distinct areas of broadcast, Internet and telecom services within and between
homes.
Ambience - Exploring the future of Intelligent Environments
This project is developing the
architectures, methods and tools needed to create ambient intelligent environments, systems and products.
This exciting new concept in information technology makes possible a digital environment that's "aware" of
our presence and able to respond to our needs, habits, gestures and emotions.
Special Focus Session
A special session will focus on Digital Entertainment, providing a unique opportunity to review the results of seven ITEA projects in this field. Teams will present their findings on issues such as creation, distribution, presentation, storage and protection of content, followed by an open discussion.
Keynote speeches
In the session on Friday morning four keynote speeches will explore the potential of the ITEA programme for enhancing the future competitiveness of Europe:
Digital Cinema
Sjoerd De Clerck, Managing Director, Barco Digital Cinema, Belgium
Perspectives on Software Engineering
Dominique Vernay, Corporate Technical Director, Thales
Group, France
Perspectives on Software, Solutions and Services for the Cyber-Enterprise
Winfried Holz, Division
President, Global Business Unit Solutions, Siemens Business Services, Germany
ICT within Spain's R&D programme 2004-2007
Gonzalo Leon Serrano, Secretary-General of
Scientific Policy, Ministry of Science and Technology, Spain
Panel discussion
On Friday afternoon a distinguished panel will discuss "ITEA and Open Source Software". With Gert Siegle,
Senior Advisor Robert Bosch, and former member of the ITEA Board in the chair, the panel members are:
Seppo
Aaltonen, Head of Service Market Development, Mobile Software at Nokia, Philippe Aigrain, Founder and CEO of
the Society for Public Information Spaces, and scientific advisor of IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et
Coordination Acoustique Musique), Alfonso Fuggetta, Professor at Politecnico di Milano and Director of
CEFRIEL, Gerard Roucairol, Chairman Réseau National des Technologies Logicielles (RNTL), and Scientific
Director of BULL, and Winfried Seidel, Siemens Corporate Technology, representative of the ITEA core team on
Open Source Software.
Third ITEA Achievement Award
During dinner on the Thursday evening, Prince Filip, the Crown Prince of Belgium, will present the 3rd ITEA achievement award. This prestigious honour highlights a concrete example of true European collaboration that promotes the ITEA programme and its goals.
About ITEA
Information Technology for European Advancement - ITEA - is Europe's premier cooperative programme for pre-competitive research and development in embedded and distributed software.
ITEA, which was established in 1999 as a EUREKA strategic cluster programme, supports coordinated national funding submissions, providing the link between those who supply finance, technology and software engineering. Issuing annual Calls for Projects, evaluating projects and helping bring research partners together, ITEA plays a prominent role in European software development with some 6,500 person-years of R&D invested in the programme so far.
ITEA-labelled projects build vital middleware and prepare standards, laying the foundations for the next generation of products, systems, appliances and services. ITEA projects are industry-driven, involving complementary R&D from at least two companies in two countries. The programme is open to partners from large industrial companies, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as public research institutes and universities.
Founding companies include Alcatel, Barco, Bosch, Bull, DaimlerChrysler, Italtel, Nokia, Philips Electronics, Siemens, Thales, and Thomson multimedia, later joined by the European Federation of high-tech Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). These firms are all leaders in their field, whether in automotive, telecommunications, mobile communication, consumer electronics or information technology.
